EdD Alumni Profile: Susan Lemke
Dissertation: Science Reform Efforts: Understanding Science Teachers’ Beliefs about Inquiry Instruction
I am a Program Manager for K-12 Math & Science in the Fremont Unified School District.
My dissertation research, Science Reform Efforts: Understanding Science Teachers’ Beliefs about Inquiry Instruction, was designed to understand teachers’ beliefs about inquiry teaching practices and the barriers that may hinder their use of this approach. High quality, effective science education is an equity issue and reform efforts over the last three decades have not been fruitful. This means that many students are left out of the rich opportunities STEM programs offer. My research findings will be used to design more responsive and appropriate professional development.
I appreciated the focus on social justice and equity as well as the commitment to the small group cohort model. The close relationships I formed throughout the program sustained me throughout the challenging process and enriched my overall experience.
The EdD program is a unique and transformative educational experience. The small cohort model along with the central focus on social justice and adult learning theory created a supportive, yet challenging environment for professional and personal growth. I grew as a leader as a result of the program and more importantly, experienced significant personal growth. Equally important, I formed lasting friendships with my cohort colleagues.
