Executive Director of Campus Safety Hampton Cantrell to Take Role at Caltech
Dear Saint Mary’s Community,
I write today to ask the Saint Mary’s community to join me in congratulating Hampton Cantrell, Executive Director of Campus Safety and Transportation, as he prepares to return to Southern California as the new Chief of Security and Parking Services at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
In just one school year, Hampton has made a tremendous impact on behalf of keeping Saint Mary’s students, faculty, and staff safe. As the chair of the Saint Mary’s Action and Response Team (SMART), he has led the College’s efforts to revise and expand our ability to identify and respond to emergency situations on campus. The infrastructure he has helped to establish will continue to serve the Saint Mary’s community well into the future.
Hampton has also made measurable change in a number of other areas, including:
- Refocusing Campus Safety’s service mission on close collaboration and consultation with key departments on campus, particularly Student Life, Facilities, and Information Technology Services.
- Serving as co-chair of the recently created Enterprise Risk Management Steering Committee, where he developed processes for identifying major campus risks and included them in a comprehensive institutional risk register.
- Working with Facilities and ITS to create a campus-wide physical security plan that utilizes more security cameras, electronic door access controls, intrusion alarms, and an improved emergency notification system to make the campus safer.
While I am sad to see Hampton leave, I am extremely grateful for the work he has done here at Saint Mary’s and confident we can continue to build on the progress he has made. Hampton’s last day at Saint Mary’s will be August 19, and I will share information about an opportunity to celebrate his contributions to our community, as well as information about next steps in identifying his replacement, at a later date.
Best regards,
Richard Plumb, PhD
