Faculty and Staff: A Visit from Kanopy
As we head into the Spring semester, it is easy to feel that a lightning rod is attached to us as we head into a tropical storm. It gets busy around here! But I wanted to alert you to a wonderful opportunity for the February Ask a Librarian workshop.
Save the date: Wednesday, February 25th, 1-2 pm, Wildenradt Theatre, Library
Kanopy is coming to talk with the campus!
Faculty and staff are familiar with the difficulty of trying to find a particular documentary or film for viewing in the classroom or assigning students to view outside of class. These films are often expensive, so it is common to try to borrow them from the library (or other libraries if they are not available from SMC). Once found, the physical DVD or VHS may be scratched or unusable. And with a single physical copy, it’s difficult to guarantee that every student will have the opportunity to view it outside of class. In short, finding and watching a film with a class can be a challenging experience.
Kanopy aims to change this. Kanopy is a film database now available through the Saint Mary’s College Library. Key features of this film database include:
- A large catalog of streaming films and documentaries for a wide range of subject areas including the arts, business and training, health sciences, media and communication, natural sciences, social sciences, and teacher education.
- All films are licensed for classroom viewing and can be projected onto a large lecture screen with minimal interference to the resolution.
- Films can be viewed off-campus, with an unlimited number of simultaneous viewers.
For films not included in the database, such as very old films that are no longer being issued, Kanopy may request the rights to the film to include it in the collection and make it available to you and your class.
