Graduate Student Spotlight: Marc Kaiser MA '18

September 2, 2018

Southern California native and Saint Mary’s College alumnus, Marc Kaiser MA ‘18, is no stranger to the SMC community. The former SMC Rugby “Iron Man” award winner earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2009, a single subject credential in Physical Education in 2010, and a Masters of Arts in Teaching in 2016. “I chose the Graduate Kinesiology program at Saint Mary's because of the incredible experience I had previously encountered as a Gael, and because I knew Saint Mary's would help give me the resources to elevate my career through teaching appointments and internship opportunities.”

With an ultimate goal of teaching and coaching full-time at the collegiate level, Marc has spent the past eight years as a high school Physical Education instructor and a football, rugby, women's lacrosse, cross country, and track and field coach. Marc has recently become a volunteer coach with the Saint Mary’s College cross country and track team and works as a graduate instructor, teaching archery to SMC undergraduates. “I feel much more prepared to excel in my profession due to the practical and theoretical concepts that I have learned in the Graduate Kinesiology program at Saint Mary's. I have enjoyed all of my classes, but have found the KINES 320: Administration of Kinesiology and KINES 375: Applied Concepts of Exercise Science to be the most readily applicable to my daily life as a coach and teacher.”

When asked his best advice for incoming students, Marc encourages them to, “Take advantage of on-campus internships, jobs, teaching opportunities, and independent study courses. Don't just come to Saint Mary's to go to class and then go home; get involved! Saint Mary's is a very special place and once you are a Gael you will never want to leave. Go Gaels!“
