Introducing the EdS in School Psychology

by Kalmanovitz School of Education | December 7, 2023

This year, the KSOE officially launched an Education Specialist in School Psychology Program!

Formerly the Counseling specialization in School Psychology, the program has been expanded to allow students to earn an Education Specialist degree. This degree provides a level of education that takes postgraduate students beyond the master’s level, and can serve as a stepping stone towards earning a terminal degree. Our graduates will have a whole new world of opportunities opened to them upon completing the program.

School psychologists provide direct counseling support and interventions to students to improve academic achievement, promote positive behavior and mental health, strengthen family-school partnerships, and improve school-wide assessment and accountability. Practitioners hone the tools necessary to advocate for systemic change and positive outcomes for all students. School psychologists specifically work with marginalized children and families ensuring that all children have access to education that supports their learning differences.

There is currently a national shortage of school psychologists which is significant given that this is a federally mandated position in school. Given the current demand for school psychologists nationwide, the EdS degree leads to better employment opportunities in this highly sought-after field.

The program runs for a minimum of three years, during which time students will ‘learn about the history, theories, and research behind the field of counseling and specifically school psychology, and gain a variety of tools to support the success of all students with respect for human diversity and social justice’. KSOE faculty are dedicated to providing students with a high touch, individualized experience, aiming to ensure that every student feels seen and supported as they pursue their academic goals.
