With just days until the opening night of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, we wanted to shine a light on the unsung heroes of any theatre production: the backstage crew! Our production features professional guest artists, faculty, staff, and students all collaborating together to create our wild and unexpected faery world.
Senior Rylee Cagle (she/her) serves as the nerve center and hub of the entire production: the Stage Manager. Rylee is ably assisted in rehearsal every night by Alex Perez (he/they) and Nox Lassett-Egbert (they/them). Other seniors in leadership roles include Props Manager Joanne Houston (she/her) and stagehand Harley Hermosillo (he/him). Professional guest artist Maggie Whitaker (she/they) has designed and created all the costumes for the production, and wardrobe assistants Graycie Duncan-Horning (they/them), Zaniyyah Johnson (she/her), Kiyana Lofton (she/her), and Isabelle Palmer (she/her) snap into action for multiple quick changes every performance. Professional guest artist Lana Palmer has created an awe-inspiring soundscape as sound designer, with first-year student Cooper Karabian operating the sound console. The scenic environment was designed by faculty member Deanna Zibello and built by our ever-flexible and inventive Technical Director Beckett Finn, assisted by students including Bridget Douglas (she/her), Michael Nightingale (he/him), and Daniella Wilson (she/her). Professional guest artist Danielle O’Dea devised expressive movement for the piece, including intimacy and fight choreography while Dance adjunct professor Andrew Merell created the dance choreography. Acting Director of Choral & Vocal Activities, Michael Blackburn, prepared the singers for the touches of music added to this production. Finally, Master Electrician Danielle Ferguson (she/her), student Light Board Operator Reece Harrison (they/them), and lighting students Emma Ledesma (she/her) and Regina Molitoris (she/her) light up the magical forest nightly, implementing the technicolor vision of alumna Katie Gubler (she/they, class of ‘20) who returns to SMC as our lighting designer.
Performing Arts Department Program Coordinator and Events Manager Tara Sundy supports the production in innumerable ways related to marketing, box office, and publicity; while Production Manager Matthew Cohen oversees and supports all production departments.
While these behind-the-scenes contributors won’t be seen on the LeFevre stage, their hard work and artistry will. We invite you to cheer on your students, colleagues, and classmates in this heartfelt and hilarious production. Just five in-person performances!
