New Boathouse To Be Built For Saint Mary’s Crew Program

Saint Mary’s College Rowing has been thriving since its beginning in 1965, with first student-athletes competing against established club and university programs on the West Coast. Though the program has succeeded over the years student-funded, men and women’s crews now rowing against PAC-12 and other large intercollegiate programs has caused times to change.

 Currently, the Saint Mary’s crew members practice at the world-class Briones Reservoir; however, as the program looks toward the future, its greatest needs are a new boathouse and enhanced ancillary facilities, allowing the dedicated student-athletes every opportunity to compete at the highest level in the sport. Accordingly, it is time for the alumni and friends of Saint Mary’s crew to help build the best possible training facilities for our rowers.

 A new boathouse for the Saint Mary’s College rowing program is currently in the works. The Ed Lickiss Boathouse will include two separate boat bays for men and women, an outdoor area to train and erg on the back deck, and storage space for 10 eights, 8 fours, 12 pairs/doubles, 4 singles, 80 sweep oars and 8 sculling oars. The boathouse will also include a Lickiss Memorial, as well as the history of the Saint Mary’s college rowing program.

 The new boathouse will expand on and off-campus recruiting capabilities, unite men’s and women’s crew programs, give our current and future female rowers every opportunity to compete for  West Coast Conference Championship, and expand participation and retention numbers for men’s crew.
