Past President of Saint Mary's Board of Regents Dies

Albert Maggio, an honorary alumnus and past president of the Saint Mary’s College of California Board of Regents, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 15. He served with the regents from 1973 until 2000. His son, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, grandson and niece all attended Saint Mary’s College.

He was a retired banking executive who worked in the banking industry for 53 years. He began his career in 1934 with Bank of America and left 13 years later as a vice president. He was with Marble Mortgage Company for 17 years, First San Francisco Bank for 3 years, and the last 20 years as vice president and director at the Hibernia Bank.

He was born in San Francisco on Nov. 11, 1914 and raised in the Marina District. He attended Lowell High School in San Francisco. After graduation, he attended Heald Business College, where he earned a degree in business and accounting. He later earned an MBA from Northwestern University and also completed a program in mortgage banking at Stanford University.

He was heavily involved in philanthropic and civic causes. He was president of the Serra International Club, Saint Mary’s Hospital Board, the Hanna Boys Center and the Olympic Club of San Francisco. He served as director of Saint Anne’s House in San Francisco. He was a member of the Knights of Malta, the San Francisco Rotary Club, the United Crusade, the Boys Scouts of America and the San Francisco Real Estate Board.

A rosary vigil will be held on Sunday, Dec. 18, at 3 p.m. at Duggans-Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave. in Daly City. The funeral Mass will held on Monday, Dec. 19, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gregory's Church, 2715 Hacienda, in San Mateo.
