Saint Mary’s Award-Winning Choir Rings in the Holidays with “Shambala”

A holiday gift from Saint Mary's: Hear our internationally-acclaimed choir belt out a Billboard classic.

At the annual holiday concert on December 1 and 3, SMC Glee, Chamber Choir, and Jazz Singers all brought down the house with the program for “One True Joy” in the Saint Mary’s Chapel. They shared songs of praise and spirituals, as well as seasonal classics and deep cuts from an array of artists, from Billie Holiday to Beyoncé.

Of course they decked the halls—the halls of Shambala, specifically—with a stirring rendition by the Glee singers of the 1973 chart-topping "Shambala," first popularized by Three Dog Night.

SMC Glee Club has a ten-year track record of international awards, including one gold and two silver medals at the World Choir Games Championships. To anyone who attended their recent concert, that shouldn't come as a surprise: the students received "spontaneous standing ovations" throughout the show, notes Julie Ford, Saint Mary's Music Program Director and Director of Vocal-Choral Activities.

"Quite remarkable, particularly because they sang in masks to preserve wellness for their upcoming finals," Ford adds. “It was thrilling to have live steam audiences and a packed house for both concerts."

Enjoy SMC Glee's rendition of "Shambala!"
