Statement on El Paso, Dayton, and Gilroy Mass Shootings

August 5, 2019

Dear Saint Mary’s Community Members,

Our nation is grieving once again, and we collectively pray for the 34 people killed in three mass shootings this past week in Gilroy, CA, El Paso, TX, and Dayton OH. I ask that you join me in offering prayers for the families who now grieve for lost loved ones, and blessings for those wounded in these heinous attacks. While the College has students from the Gilroy area, thankfully none of our community members seem to be directly affected by that tragedy.

Federal, state, and local officials continue to seek motives for the horrific attacks in Dayton and Gilroy. However, it is clear in the massacre in El Paso, the motivation was born from the repugnant belief of white supremacy. Saint Mary’s is a diverse, inclusive community and proudly stands in solidarity with the people of El Paso, and condemns the hate-inspired killings in that city, and the barbaric acts in Dayton and in Gilroy.

We recognize that these recent acts may be unsettling. It is important to remember that Saint Mary’s is committed to a safe campus for all. In the event of an emergency, or perceived threat of violence, we encourage community members to contact 911, or SMC’s Campus Safety Department at 925-631-4282 or through the LiveSafe App. Campus safety is the College’s first priority.

Let us continue to pray for the people of Gilroy, El Paso, and Dayton, and remember that as a Lasallian community, our commitment to the principles of respect for all persons and inclusive community must be unwavering. In the spirit of Saint John Baptist de LaSalle, it is clear that those principles need to be championed wherever we are, on this campus, in our respective communities, and, importantly, across this country.

Sincerely,

James A. Donahue
