THUCYDIDES’ HISTORY: On Politics and Plagues with Rali Christo & Br. Charles Hilken
Right after “Pericles’ Funeral Oration” in Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War comes the vivid description of the “Plague of Athens.” Readers today wonder how the plague affected Athenian society, and especially those Athenian civic virtues so eloquently described by Pericles. This presentation will focus on Thucydides’ concerns about the plague’s political impacts, and tease out connections to the current pandemic.
