Journeys of Race and Culture for People of Color and Whites: Paths to Valuing Diversity
-An Inclusive Excellence Mini-Workshop-
Every one of us – whether a person of color or white – has been deeply impacted by growing up into a culture in which racism, dominance, and subordination are ongoing realities. What do we consciously and unconsciously internalize about “self” and “other” – about “us” and “them?” How does this affect our interactions and relationships across racial lines?
From a close analysis of people’s experiences across the decades, we can identify the pathways towards authentically valuing diversity. For people of color, what are significant milestones in the journey that takes people from a place of internalized oppression to a search for identity and ultimately towards community building within and across racial lines?
Similarly, what milestones do whites experience as they move from dominant-subordinate interactions with people of color to a serious exploration of their whiteness and on towards cross-racial collaboration in the efforts to dismantle racism. In this program, participants will:
- Become acquainted with the “Journeys of Race & Culture” framework
- Share our individual and collective journeys as people of color and as whites – when we’ve been stuck in place and when we’ve move forward towards authentic affirmation of “self” and “other."
- Discuss how we can continue moving forward, both personally and in relationship with each other as people of color and whites.
This workshop is both reflective and interactive; it is open to all staff and faculty.
