Saint Mary’s College and the Black Lives Matter Subcommittee are excited to welcome CNN political commentator and NPR analyst, Angela Rye, as the featured speaker during 44 Days Honoring Black History. The event, “Angela Rye in Conversation with Bedford Palmer” is being held on Friday, March 5, 2021 at 6:45 p.m.

Uniquely described in her biography as an “Empowermenteur, Advocate, and Politista,” Rye, who is also a lawyer, serves as principal and chief executive officer of IMPACT Strategies, a political advocacy firm that she co-founded in Washington, D.C.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to sit down for a one-on-one conversation with Angela Rye,” said Bedford Palmer, PhD, licensed psychologist, associate professor, and chair of the Counseling Department at Saint Mary's. “She has her finger on the pulse of what’s important and significant in our diverse communities, and I know our event attendees will be inspired and enlightened by her unwavering commitment and work for positive change in the political process.”

Rye is no stranger to the airwaves, appearing often to provide commentary on BET, CNN, NBC, HBO, ABC, MSNBC and TV One. She has also been featured in notable publications including the Washington Post, Marie Claire and Ebony Magazine. Rye delves deep into issues impacting political campaigns and complex legislation that have long-term implications nationally and abroad.

“Having someone of her stature speak to our Saint Mary’s community is an incredible opportunity,” said Kathy Littles, assistant vice provost for faculty affairs and senior diversity officer. “Politics and issues of equity and social justice are serious matters that we must continue to address, and having Angela Rye at the forefront of vocalizing about the inherent politics involved is empowering.”

Rye’s tenure of professional experience includes serving as the executive director and general counsel to the Congressional Black Caucus for the 112th Congress where she developed the overall legislative and political strategy for the Caucus. She has also served as senior advisor and counsel to the House Committee on Homeland Security. A native of Seattle, Washington, Rye received her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington, and her law degree from Seattle University School of Law.

“Angela Rye in Conversation with Bedford Palmer” is open to the Saint Mary’s community and the general public, however, registration is required to attend. Register here.
