About

Join San Francisco artist, Malcolm Kenter, in conversation with SMCMoA curator, britt royer, as they discuss his work in the current exhibition, Synecdoche.

About the exhibition: San Francisco-based artist Kenter constructs architectural paintings that speak to the urban environment, providing pauses for meditative consideration and care for the utilitarian components and worn markings of San Francisco’s built architecture and urban symbolism. On view September 16 through December 13, 2026

About the artist: Malcolm Kenter, born in 1987, lives and works in San Francisco. Kenter’s practice could be described as a conceptual mining of the urban vernacular, focusing on the Bay Area’s disappearing signage, public infrastructure, and patina. Through a highly precise sculptural workflow, Kenter replicates utility boxes, fire alarms, and other “invisible” city materials as a form of cultural and historical preservation of his hometown.
