About
For the opening night of The Late Wedding at Saint Mary’s College of California, SF playwright Christopher Chen will give a special pre-performance talk. This event is co-sponsored by Seminar Enrichment Series, the Anthropology Department and the Theatre Program. Chen will be interviewed by the director and Saint Mary’s faculty member Javier Luis Hurtado, PhD, at 6:30 p.m. in the Saint Mary’s Intercultural Center, across from the Lefevre Theatre Box Office. The conversation is free for everyone, and light refreshments will be provided.
What can you expect? The Late Wedding offers an anthropological tour through marriage customs, a spy thriller, and a sci-fi love story in a genre-bending production that is an inventive and surprising theatrical experience. The show runs October 29 through November 2 in LeFevre Theatre at Saint Mary's College of California.
Meet the Playwright
Christopher Chen is an Obie Award-winning playwright whose works include The Headlands (Lincoln Center, A.C.T.), Caught (New York Times Critics Pick, Play Company), The Late Wedding (Crowded Fire), Passage (Soho Rep), You Mean To Do Me Harm (San Francisco Playhouse), and The Hundred Flowers Project (Crowded Fire). Additional honors include the Windham Campbell Prize and USA Fellow.
As a screenwriter he co-wrote The Accidental Getaway Driver, and is currently working on projects with Kim Jee-woon and Steven Yeun. Chris also served as writer and co-producer for the upcoming Spider-Verse television series Noir. Chen’s plays examine the hidden patterns beneath complex systems: socio-political systems, psychological systems, systems of power. He combines naturalism with the absurd within maximalist kaleidoscopic structures. A San Francisco native, Chen is a graduate of University of California, Berkeley, and holds an MFA in Playwriting from San Francisco State University.
