From Locke to the Declaration: "We Hold These Truths…”

Some say history is determined by material forces: military, economic, and geographic. But words also change the course of history. As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, my thesis is that it contains the most powerful sentence in the history of the world. We will explore how It transformed Locke’s abstract philosophy into a “vision statement” that became the hinge of human history.
