About

Exit West hinges on the trope of the "magic door," a device drawn from speculative fiction. This umbrella genre covers a range of imaginative forms—futuristic, magical realist, sci-fi fantasy, and more. Yet the world of Exit West is familiar, contemporary, real. Using an interactive format, we’ll revisit some well-known magic doors: Narnia’s wardrobe, Harry Potter’s “room of requirement,” and the magic mirror in Snow White. Then we’ll consider what Hamid’s “magic doors" reveal: about displacement, migration, and becoming a refugee.
