Cal Shakes' Season Launch & Community Picnic

by Rebecca Engle, Professor Emerita and Scholar in Residence, Theatre; Chair, Seminar Informal Curriculum | May 13, 2024

Saint Mary’s faculty, staff, students, alumni, and families and neighbors, are invited to Cal Shakes' Season Launch and Community Picnic (May 18, 12-4pm at the Bruns Amphitheater, Orinda). In recognition of our long-standing institutional partnership, three graduates of Saint Mary’s Theatre Program have been invited to perform.

  • Senior Ryanne Biernat (‘24) will reprise her hilarious capstone project, Faire Play, a standout of the spring production, Send it to the Moon.
  • Kimiya Shokri ('19, Asst. Director, Intercultural Center) and Justin Howard ('19, Admissions) will match wits as Beatrice and Benedick, the dueling duo from Shakespears' comedy, Much Ado About Nothing

In addition, the many SMC Theatre alumni who trained, interned, completed capstones, worked behind the scenes, and performed with Cal Shakes over the last 25 years, will get a shout-out from the stage.  A sneak preview of Cal Shakes' own 50th anniversary production, As You Like It will conclude the program.

Across the afternoon, there'll be kid-friendly art-making activities led by Junior Center of Art & Science. Tickets are Pay What You Can, with a suggested minimum donation of $5. Come for an hour or an afternoon: the Bruns is a beautiful spot to picnic, connect, relax, and celebrate Cal Shakes as a valued resource for our community.
