Gaels Make Program History with Bid to MCLA National Tournament
MORAGA, Calif.-For the first time in program history, Saint Mary's Men's Lacrosse has qualified for the MCLA Division II National Tournament. This sixteen team bracket of national lacrosse powerhouses will be held May 14-19, 2012 in Greenville, SC. The Gaels head into tournament play as three-peat WCLA champions, as the #14 seed.
With an overall record of 16-2, and an MCLA conference title under their belt, Saint Mary's first game will be May 14th at 10:30pm vs. #3 seed Westminster (15-2). The Gaels met the Griffins in competition in Moraga on February 28th. Although the Gaels lost 3-10, Saint Mary's is hungry for this opportunity to showcase their talent on the national stage, and could not be happier to head into the first round facing an opponent they have seen before.
In addition to Westminster, Saint Mary's is familiar with a number teams in this year's tournament. The team's strength of schedule over the past two years has prepared the Gaels well, for this first-ever invite to nationals. In addition to Westminster, the Gaels have played: #7 SCAD (2011- L, 5-9) , #11 Concordia (2012- L 7-12) and #16 Western Oregon (2012- W, 9-8).
The Gaels unyielding schedule and performance got them a nod for nationals, and the team looks forward to showing Greenville, SC that that they deserve to be there.
