Gaels Smash Stress Away Ahead of Summer Break

by Office of Residential Experience | May 20, 2026

As spring finals approached and the summer heat settled over campus, students at Saint Mary's found the perfect way to cool off their stress on Tuesday, May 19. Ferroggiaro Quad transformed into a lively oasis of relief, laughter, and community as Campus Experience (Campus Housing, Residential Experience & New Student Programs), with support from the Student Enhancement Fee, hosted a plate smashing event designed to help students release the pressure of finals season before heading into summer break.

Under the glow of warm evening lights and a cool night breeze, students gathered to trade anxiety for a moment of cathartic release. Before entering the smash zone, participants decorated ceramic plates with the worries weighing on them throughout the semester. Some wrote the names of difficult classes or final projects, while others covered their plates with doodles, frustrations, countdowns to summer, and reminders of sleepless study nights.

Once finished, students stepped up one by one, hurling their plates onto the pavement as cheers erupted across the quad. The sharp crack of shattering ceramic mixed with music, laughter, and the buzzing energy of students finally letting go after a long semester.

“So much fun 10/10 would recommend and do again“ said Hailey ’29. “With summer so close, this was exactly the reset I needed.”

For many students, the event offered more than just a fun activity. It became a symbolic release before stepping into final exams and summer break.

“I loved writing everything down and then just smashing it,” shared Marcus ’26. “It made me feel lighter afterward, like I could finally breathe again.”

As temperatures cooled down throughout the evening, the atmosphere on the quad shifted from tense and exhausted to celebratory and carefree. Students lingered after their turn, cheering on friends, taking photos, and enjoying a moment of connection during one of the busiest weeks of the semester.

Campus Experience staff were excited to see the strong turnout and the positive impact the event had on campus morale.

“We’re thrilled to see students embracing opportunities to pause, recharge, and support one another during finals season,” said Fiona Corner, Assistant Director of Residential Experience. “This time of year can feel overwhelming, so creating spaces where students can release stress and head into summer feeling refreshed is really important to us.”

More Than Just Stress Relief

What appeared to be a simple plate-smashing activity quickly became something much more meaningful. By encouraging students to physically let go of their worries, the event created a shared experience of vulnerability, relief, and joy. In the middle of finals week, when many students can feel isolated by deadlines and academic pressure, Ferroggiaro Quad instead became a space filled with encouragement and community.

The event also highlighted the importance of balancing academic success with mental wellness. As students prepared for late-night study sessions, final papers, and exams, Campus Experience offered a reminder that caring for oneself is just as important as preparing for finals.

With glowing feedback and an enthusiastic turnout, the plate-smashing event is quickly becoming a favorite campus tradition, now in its fourth semester. As students count down the days until move-out, the Campus Experience team hopes to continue bringing this high energy stress relief event back each semester, giving Gaels a chance to cool down, let go, and finish the year strong.
