Graduate Student Spotlight: Alicia Florin MA '18

September 26, 2018

One visit to the Graduate Kinesiology program at Saint Mary’s College was enough to make Alicia Florin MA ‘18, feel right at home. “I was looking at a few places, but after meeting with Program Manager, Kelly Luquet, I knew this was the right place for me.”

The former collegiate women’s lacrosse player earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Kenyon College. Alicia continues to pursue her passion for lacrosse in her current positions as Program Coordinator and Operations Manager for the Oakland Lacrosse Club, Club Lacrosse Coach for Tenacity Elite, and as a Volunteer Assistant Coach for UC Berkeley’s Women’s Lacrosse team.

Of her academic experience, Alicia notes the immediate applicability of the coursework to her current roles: “I came out of the Psychological Analysis of Sport & Exercise class with an entirely new perspective about coaching. The course provided me with a new skill set to implement during practices and games.”

When thinking about her future, Alicia shares, “My career goals include working as a program director for a sports non-profit, becoming an athletic director at the high school or Division III level, or possibly working in operations at the collegiate or professional level.”

Alicia’s best advice to the next generation of Graduate Kinesiology Students is, “Utilize the connections provided to you by your professors and strong alumni base. Put in the work to form  relationships with them during the program - that way, once you graduate, they won't hesitate to help you in any way they can!”
