KSOE Alumnus Leading CA Science Curriculum Reform
Bryan Boyd received his Multiple Subject Credential from KSOE in 2002. He is currently the Science Consultant for the Curriculum Framework and Instructional Resources Division at the California Department of Education. He is the lead for the revision of the 2017 Science Framework and it will align to the California NGSS. He will also be the lead for the California Science Instructional Materials Adoption. Boyd said, “Who would have ever thought that I would be working on the frameworks I learned at Saint Mary’s over 15 years ago?”
Brian still remembers activities he did in Professor Marston’s science class. “It is remarkable to me how these instructional strategies strongly align to the California’s Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), even before they existed.”
“My education at Saint Mary’s laid a solid foundation and helped me develop into a well-rounded educator and prepared me for my current position," Boyd said. "Most of all, it is amazing to know that the instruction and everything I was taught at Saint Mary’s is influencing the revision of the Science Framework. It is a document that will reach every child, teacher, and administrator in California."
After graduating from Saint Mary’s, Bryan completed his Master’s Degree in 2003 and Doctorate of Education in 2007. He continued his education with a TESL Certificate from UC Berkeley. He also had the opportunity to teach in two Title I Schools that had high English Language Learner populations. He also taught Sheltered Math and Science, Algebra, Pre-Algebra, and Life Science.
