Library Construction Updates

Demo underway, Fall brings seismic work

by Dean Lauren MacDonald and library staff | August 17, 2026

As the fall semester approaches, expect to see and hear more activity as external seismic retrofitting gets underway. This work will bring periods of loud drilling on and off throughout the fall. We'll send communication ahead of days with particularly noteworthy noise or disruption so the campus community can plan accordingly.

The timeline remains on schedule:

  • Summer: Internal demolition and hazard remediation
  • Fall: External seismic reinforcement
  • Spring: Internal building and renovation

We are still on track to reopen to the community for the Fall 2027 semester.

We recognize that this coming academic year of construction will bring disruption, with noise and the loss of the upper gravel parking lot among the top impacts.

With the successful move of library services to the Power Plant last spring, we demonstrated we can navigate change of this magnitude together. We are grateful for our continued partnerships across campus as we do everything we can to minimize disruption and maintain continuity in the student experience during this period of displacement.

These improvements are being funded entirely through donor support, and we are deeply grateful to the alumni, families, friends, and community members who have helped make this long-awaited vision a reality.

When complete, our library will be a dynamic, comfortable, and safe space for students to learn and thrive at Saint Mary’s for decades to come.

Thank you for your patience and continued support.
