In Memory of Len Tran
A message to the Saint Mary's Community
It is with deep sadness that I write to share that one of our first-year students, Len Tran, passed away late Thursday evening, March 19, following medical complications.
A member of the Class of 2029, Len was from San Jose and a graduate of Archbishop Mitty High School. Although her time at Saint Mary’s was far too brief, she was working to find her place in our community.
She approached her studies with curiosity and creativity, and was especially engaged in her recent January Term course, where she embraced the opportunity for hands-on learning in the sciences. As she looked ahead, Len was beginning to shape her academic path with an interest in fields such as science and psychology, and she was optimistic about what lay ahead.
Those who knew Len describe her as thoughtful, creative, and caring—someone who was honest about her experiences and hopeful for her future. She was happy to be part of the Saint Mary’s community, which makes this loss all the more profound.
This loss is especially painful for those who knew Len personally, including those members of our community who supported her along the way, such as her advisor and Vice President for Mission, Frances Sweeney, success coach Collin Pugh, and Judy Selland in our Academic Success office, all of whom supported Len in her academic and personal journey.
I know that many across our campus—students, faculty, and staff alike—will feel the weight of Len’s loss in different ways. Moments like this remind us of the importance of caring for one another with compassion and presence.
In the days ahead, I encourage all members of our community to take care of yourselves and to reach out for support if you need it. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and TimelyCare (24/7 immediate connection to a counselor) are available to students, and Ministry & Mission is also here to provide comfort and space for reflection. Employees may access support through our Employee Assistance Program.
We will share additional information, including any plans to honor Len’s life, as it becomes available and in consultation with her family, which has requested privacy at this time.
Please keep Len, her family, and all who loved her in your thoughts and prayers.
