Message About Moraga Shooting

January 20, 2020

Jan. 19, 2020  (updated Jan. 20)

Dear Saint Mary's Community Members,

As we have shared in the earlier campus alerts, on Sunday, January 19 at approximately 7:30 p.m., three people were shot near the Starbucks in the Rheem Shopping Center in Moraga. Tragically, this incident involved a current Saint Mary’s student and a former SMC student, who had previously been involved in a relationship. The former student has been arrested for the shooting. We are grateful to have learned that the injuries of the victims, which includes a friend of the Saint Mary’s student, are not life-threatening, and we pray to God for their full recovery.

We are a College committed to preventing relationship violence and this incident underscores the need to continue these efforts. I understand the emotional impact that this incident may cause for our campus community. It is extremely distressing for me personally, and I encourage our community members to take advantage of the counseling and spiritual resources available to support our students, staff and faculty on the campus.

We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates to the community. The Moraga Police Department is investigating the incident, and Saint Mary’s Campus Safety is cooperating fully with law enforcement. The safety, security, and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff remains my highest priority.

Let us keep the wellbeing of those who were harmed foremost in our prayers.

Sincerely,

James A. Donahue
President
