Plays chosen by the senior Theatre capstone class include:
Andromeda by Miriella Jiffar
A modern re-envisioning of the Classic Greek and Aethopian princess in this premiere piece by a new writer. Andromeda travels to become betrothed to a man she despises in this intimate look into Andromeda’s inner thoughts as she grapples with royal expectations.
Dear Noah by Ashley Baumgartner
A premiere of Saint Mary’s own Ashley Baumgartner, this new work centers on a young woman, Georgia, packing her grandmother’s house. Moving through blurred timelines - modern and the 1940s, this young woman discovers in a journal that her secret may run through matrilineal lines. CONTENT WARNING: Suicidal talk, mentall illness, and medical procedures discussed.
Faire Play by Mike DiSalvo
Alisson St. John is a passionate young Renaissance Faire actor who wants to play Hamlet. Filled with rage from her director not taking her seriously, she decides to express herself through the use of social media. On one hand, she's trying to plead her case to an audience that may or not listen, and on the other, she wants to plot her revenge on the director Trevor. Maybe she is Hamlet after all… what could possibly go wrong?!
Helen by Ellen McLaughlin
In this take on Euripides' tragicomedy, Helen never went to Troy but spent the war (fought in her name) in an Egyptian hotel room waiting for her husband Menelaus to come find her and take her home. In her odd exile, Helen receives visitors from throughout time who inform her of the devastation that her empty image has wrought upon the world. Bewildered by her strange escape from her own story, even Menelaus' final arrival cannot save Helen from the legend that has grown far larger than the woman who inspired it. CONTENT WARNING: Talk of violence.
MS Maelstrom by Theatre of Yugen Artists
Inspired by two Edgar Allan Poe pieces, MS Maelstrom follows a child as he sits in his room and contemplates independence. We go on a journey with him in his imagination to explore the Java sea with a ship full of sailors. Chaotic emotions, storms, physicists, aliens?, and maybe even death itself visit the surviving sailor in this exploratory performance art/movement piece.
Pull of the Moon by Paige Zubel
College couple Erin and Kaleb are struggling with the lasting effects of a sexual trauma. Simultaneously, Peter, a college professor, is giving a lecture on the cycle of waves. Peter insists there is no such thing as rebirth in the water, but Erin and Kaleb have to find a way to rebuild once their emotional waves crash down around them. CONTENT WARNING: Sexual violence mentioned, trauma shown, loud shouts.
To the Moon by Max Plata
Two former best friends meet again at a party and take a few minutes to discuss space travel, Peter Pan, and all the time between then and now... and maybe decide to drive to the moon.
Power of Words by Ariella Cooley
Two celestial beings wax poetic about the universe, their existence, and the power of planets and words.
