Saint Mary's College of California Acknowledges National Coming Out Day

by National Coming Out Day is Monday, October 11, 2021 | October 6, 2021

Que(e)ries: Diverse Genders & Sexualities Action Subcommittee of the College Committee on Inclusive Excellence at Saint Mary’s College of California recognizes the importance of National Coming Out Day (NCOD). National Coming Out Day is observed annually on October 11th to celebrate the on-going process of “coming out” and to raise awareness of the queer community and civil rights movement. The term coming out is a metaphor used to describe queer individuals’ self-disclosure of their sexual orientation or their gender identity. Coming out is an on-going multi-layered process that can include coming out to oneself, to a supportive community, as well as coming out to one’s larger community.

National Coming Out Day is designed to honor the ongoing process of coming out and is an opportunity to acknowledge and honor that many people are not yet able to feel safe coming out to themselves and others. By celebrating those who can safely come out and honoring those who cannot, National Coming Out Day is an opportunity to offer education and support, share stories and experiences, with the goal that all people may someday have the opportunity to live openly and safely. Founded in 1998 by Richard Eichberg and Jean O’Leary, October 11 marks the 1987 anniversary of the National March on Washington for Lesbian & Gay Rights.
