MORAGA Calif. - The San Diego State Aztecs traveled north to Moraga to visit the Gaels (3) this Saturday for the last home game of the regular season at Saint Mary’s Stadium.
After defeating BYU (6) last Saturday, the Gaels looked keen to get back on the pitch and deliver another outstanding performance. The forwards were busy early as Ronan Murphy (8 Man, Jr.) took advantage of a stolen SDSU scrum and found his way into goal. Five minutes later Payton Telea (Prop, Jr.) charged towards the endzone breaking two tackles dotting the ball down under the posts to add another five on the board.
The backline was eager to get involved as well. Just after Teleia’s try, Vicente Cunha-Vaz (Wing, Sr.), after perfectly timed passes from Derek Ellingson (Center, Sr.) and Joe Yacoubian (Fullback, Soph.), was able to find his way into the corner for his first of three tries in the match. Shortly after, Teleia got his quick hands involved in the action dishing a close quarters pass to Joe Marchant (Prop, Fr.) who snuck through the Aztec line for the try. The Gaels collected four more tries before the halfs end.
Replacements Kaipono Kayoshi (Center, Fr.) and Diego Vasquez (Wing, Fr.) made an immediate impact at the start of the second half. Kaipono found the endzone twice while Vasquez streaked down the sideline three times ending the day with a hat-trick. Chase Jones (Lock, Soph.), with the help of several Gael forwards and backs, drove ten meters before crossing the goal line with Aztec defenders in tow, his second try of the day.
Joe Yacoubian’s boot was on fire converting 13 of the Gaels 18 tries throughout the match. Saint Mary’s begins a stretch of road games next weekend traveling to Phoenix to face Grand Canyon University on Saturday, March 2.
Final Score: Gaels 116 - 0 Aztecs
Gael B Side 113 - 7 Aztecs
