The Saint Mary's College Theatre Program welcomes new SMC Theatre Assistant Professor Dr. Javier Luis Hurtado, the director of our 2025-2026 season opener, THE LATE WEDDING. Inspired by the writings of Italo Calvino (Invisible Cities and If on a Winter's Night a Traveler), The Late Wedding is a fractured portrait of a fractured marriage, as told through a series of interconnected fables, including an anthropological tour of fantastical tribes and their marital customs. Christopher Chen's winking second-person narrative, delivered by a nine-person shape-shifting cast, deftly guides you on a wild and delightful examination of love and longing. At once an anthropological tour through marriage customs, a spy thriller, and a sci-fi love story, the mind-bending The Late Wedding is an inventive and surprising theatrical experience.

Meet the cast

To bring THE LATE WEDDING to life, director Hurtado, has assembled an ensemble cast reflecting the diversity of our student body and showcasing the talents of our award-winning Theatre program. MFA ‘27 student Rose Wong (she/her), senior Lance Fiss (he/him), sophomores Bruno and Aidan Kiernan (he/him) and first year students Kate Barker (she/her), Juno Burtin (they/he), Liliana Canchola (she/her), Keira Lewis (she/her), and Dana Paulson (she/her) play multiple roles in these vignettes of imagined marriages.

Director Hurtado says, “This is one of my favorite plays! I use it in my classes often. It’s a dynamic piece of theatre that the playwright has described as a ‘playground.’ This play offers a director, designers, and performers a wonderful landscape of opportunity to play, imagine, and collaborate and we’re excited for audiences to share this playground with us!”

Meet the creative and production team

Bay Area Theatre technician Kathryn Gubler (SMC ‘20, they/she) returns to Saint Mary’s in a new role as a production manager with students Aubrey Bonham (she/her) and Nox Lassett-Egbert (they/them) as stage managers and Kenny Rosenblum (he/him) as a first year assistant stage manager. Kiki Hood is the set designer and newcomer Mitchell Jakubka is doing the lighting design. Ashley Renee returns as the costume designer along with Danielle Ferguson (she/her) as the master electrician. Sophomore Bianca Langlois (she/her) is filling the role as Sound Designer with senior Carolyn Gersten (she/her) as the Props Designer.  Bay Area Theatre technician “Ernie” Ernstrom has been working with a great group of students to put together the transformative set which offers flexibility for the multiple different stories. While many behind-the-scenes contributors won’t be seen on the LeFevre stage, their hard work and artistry will.
