Vice President for Student Life Anthony Garrison-Engbrecht’s Departure
Anthony Garrison-Engbrecht, Vice President for Student Life and Title IX Coordinator, has decided to step down from his current role, effective on January 6, 2023. Please join me in thanking Anthony for his incredible service, dedication, and the impact he has made in supporting the student experience at Saint Mary’s College.
As Anthony transitions from SMC, he will focus his time consulting for the University of California system as an Executive Advisor and continue to serve as adjunct faculty in the UC Berkeley higher education certificate program. Jim Sciuto, current Associate Vice President of Student Engagement and Interim Dean of Students, will serve as Interim Vice President for Student Life for the remainder of the academic year.
Anthony, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise in student affairs administration, has been instrumental in supporting the enhancement of student life at Saint Mary’s College since his arrival.
During his time at SMC, Anthony has led efforts to restructure the Division of Student Life to better support our student services, programs, and resources while providing an organizational structure that ensures effective management and support of the departments and units. He has worked in partnership with the Vice President for Administration and CFO to negotiate and onboard a new food service provider to enhance the quality and experience of dining services on campus. Anthony has also worked to strengthen collaborations with SMC Athletics by providing expanded support for student-athletes and enhancing campus-wide spirit initiatives.
Furthermore, Anthony partnered with Facilities Management on the completion of several significant projects, including the renovation of three residential halls, the enhancement of outdoor space through donor gifts, and strategic space planning to establish a roadmap for the future of housing at SMC. He has diligently worked with our academic colleagues to support student success, specifically focusing on the student experience and working towards expanding educational partnerships to articulate a comprehensive SMC experience.
Finally, his contributions and commitment to advancing social justice topics in support of the College’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts are reflected in his support of enhancing the programs, services, and resources offered by the Intercultural Center and the Center for Women and Gender Equity, including serving on the College Council for Inclusive Excellence, and co-chairing of Que(e)ries and the Asian Pacific Islander Resource Group.
These opportunities have allowed him to articulate and amplify the value of the student experience while also centering student well-being to support student success. In his remaining time on campus, Anthony will continue his work to ensure a smooth transition and business continuity.
Jim Sciuto has been a lifelong Gael and is an experienced student-centered administrator who is deeply committed to our students’ success overall. I thank him in advance for his service to our campus community and the role he will play as Interim Vice President for Student Life.
In the coming weeks, I will share an update on the search process for a new Vice President of Student Life as well as an opportunity to celebrate his contributions to our campus community.
Please join me in thanking Anthony for his service and wishing him the best!
Best regards,
Richard Plumb, Ph.D.
President
