The mission of the Office of Research is to promote, support, and recognize research, scholarship, and creative activity at Saint Mary’s College. The office facilitates sponsored funding for Saint Mary’s research and programs and fosters an internal environment that promotes research activities.

It’s the time of the year to update your scholarship information in preparation for the publication of Saint Mary’s 2019 Report on Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity.  Copies of the report will be available at the Scholars’ Reception on Friday, March 20, from 5pm to 7pm in Claeys Lounge.

• What is the Report on Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity?
It is a comprehensive showcase of faculty scholarly works completed between January 1 and December 31, 2019.  The report is an important tool in highlighting scholar accomplishments and establishing Saint Mary’s scholarly excellence with external audiences.  Click here to view previous SMC Research Reports.
• I am an adjunct faculty member.  Are you looking for information from adjunct faculty members, too? 
Yes, we invite all scholars who serve as staff or faculty at Saint Mary’s College of California to submit their work on a voluntary basis.
• I am a Saint Mary’s staff member.  May I submit my information? 
Yes, we invite all scholars who serve as staff or faculty at Saint Mary’s College of California to submit their work on a voluntary basis.
• What do you count as a “year” for the report?
A “year” for the Research Report is counted from January-December. We consider awards, published and presented scholarly works from January 1st-December 31st of the past year. 
• What should I do with a work that is in press / in progress / forthcoming?
Hold works that are in press or forthcoming for the year when they are published. 
This year's report includes publications that appeared within the calendar year of January 1, 2019, through December 31, 2019.  Please submit in press / in progress / forthcoming works next year. 
• Are performances / exhibitions considered as presentations?
Performances / exhibitions are typically considered publications.   
• Should I include other authors (students or non-SMC) as well?
Yes, and be sure to indicate which one is the primary author. 
• What if I have already updated my Scholar Profile? Do I still have to submit a form?
No, you do not have to submit a form.
Here are details for different types of submissions:
Publication: Includes books, chapters, articles, performances, exhibitions, other creative works, published reviews
Presentation: Includes paper presentations, and public readings
Honors, Awards, or Grants: Includes fellowships, awards, and grants
–     List all authors by last name, first name, and indicate who is the primary author
–     Project title, if it appears within a larger work (e.g. article, chapter, or presentation title) 
–     Larger work or publication title (e.g. journal, book, or conference) 
–     Publisher and other publication information (e.g. volume, page, etc.; include place of publication for a book)
–     Presentation / performance / production / exhibition venue and location 
–     Grant, award, or fellowship grantor; location 
–     Date of publication, presentation, performance, award, etc. 
–     doi or URL if available
