[Students] Covid-19 Vaccines Will Be Required for Fall 2021

Dear Students,

Saint Mary’s College is looking forward to welcoming you back to campus for the fall 2021 academic term, with primarily in-person instruction and a complete residential experience. An essential component of providing that experience safely is the requirement that all Saint Mary’s students whose coursework involves in-person instruction be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and report it to the College prior to arriving on campus in the fall.

Last month California expanded eligibility for vaccinations for all residents aged 16 and above, and the availability of COVID-19 vaccines has been increasing. We strongly encourage you to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

While the COVID-19 vaccine requirement is new, SMC already requires students to be immunized for most common diseases prior to attending, and the COVID-19 vaccinations would simply be an addition to this policy.

We will work with international students and others who are not able to be vaccinated prior to arriving in the fall to help them meet the new requirement. As with other immunizations, we will allow exemptions for students with documented medical or religious reasons. Where exemptions are granted, the college may require COVID-19 testing, social and access restrictions, or other limitations.

We will continue to update you on the college’s planning for the fall, which continues to be grounded in the latest state and county public health guidelines. In the meantime, thank you for doing your part to keep our campus community healthy and safe.

We look forward to seeing you soon and welcoming you to your Saint Mary’s home!
