Title IX
Title IX
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”) reads, "“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance....” 20 U.S.C. § 1681(a)."
Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Sexual harassment, which includes sexual violence, is a form of sex discrimination. Saint Mary’s College of California provides supportive measures and resources to students, faculty, and staff to address concerns related to sex discrimination. Title IX also prohibits retaliation for raising a complaint under Title IX or for advocating for a right protected by Title IX.
The regulations implementing Title IX requires the University to “designate at least one employee to coordinate its efforts to comply with and carry out its responsibilities under [Title IX].” 34 C.F.R. § 106.8. Title IX The College has appointed Anthony Garrison-Engbrecht, Vice President for Student Life, as Title IX Coordinator.
