Creative thinking for a complex world.

As part of a close-knit community of literary artists, Saint Mary's Creative Writing majors study the art and craft of poetry, fiction, nonfiction and drama, learning how to generate, polish and publish original work that captures the diversity and complexity of contemporary life. Students will study and receive mentorship from nationally recognized writers—including the College's permanent faculty, as well as Distinguished Visiting Writers who are breaking new ground in the literary arts.

Creative Writing Department Scholarship Applications Open in October

Saint Mary’s College is awarding $5,000-10,000 annual Creative Writing scholarships (renewable for up to four years) to incoming first-year students. 

We welcome writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and dramatic writing, including work for film, television, and comics. (Preference will be given to Creative Writing majors, but minors will also be considered.) 

At Saint Mary’s, you’ll develop your voice in a close-knit community, workshop your work, and learn from nationally recognized writers.

First, apply to Early Action (non-binding) by Nov. 1, which will then give you access to the departmental scholarships. Then, apply for the scholarship between October 12–December 1, 2026, by submitting:

• A 10-page portfolio of your creative work
• A one-page personal statement introducing yourself and your literary ambitions

Saint Mary’s Creative Writing faculty will review submissions. All candidates are invited to the Arts Division Showcase on Preview Day in February 2027. Scholarship decisions will be announced by the end of February 2027.
