Program Details
Curriculum
- First week: programming basics. We will use the SCRATCH programming language designed to teach middle school kids coding. It is extremely accessible, and even if you have never written any code in your life ever, you will learn the basic building blocks of programs by the end of the week - enough to create your own game!
- Second week: algebra basics. We are going to use our freshly gained programming skills to re-discover math for ourselves. Instead of memorizing rules, you will be able to re-create the basic concepts that are fundamental to mathematics using your freshly learned coding skills.
- Third week: building on the achievements of the first two weeks, a student driven capstone experience, with a focus on computational thinking. Computational thinking is a way of organizing complex tasks, whether writing a computer game, the next great American novel, constructing a home-built rocket or composing a pop song, by breaking down the complex tasks into smaller, manageable chunks, solving sub-tasks and generalizing solutions until the seemingly impossible becomes actually doable.
