Construction on the Student Athlete Performance Complex Set to Start

March 29, 2018

Thanks to the generosity of Saint Mary’s College donors, construction will start soon on the Student Athlete Performance Complex. Our high performing student-athletes and their loyal fans will soon enjoy significantly improved facilities.

Phase one of the project includes a number of state-of-the-art enhancements for in-game fan experience and updating life safety upgrades. Construction will begin following the men's and women's basketball season and is scheduled to avoid interruption to any Division I athletic programs in the fall of 2018.

The in-game fan experience enhancements include an innovative video board and complete replacement of the sound system. New lighting and flooring are also included in phase one of the project.

Facility improvements include a new roof and fire and safety upgrades for the 40-year-old pavilion. The new enhancements will ensure a continued safe experience for all student-athletes, coaches, and Saint Mary's fans.

"Our commitment to support our student-athletes, coaches, and SMC fans is unwavering. I am confident that the upcoming renovations and improvements to McKeon Pavilion will enhance the competitive advantage we want for all of our student-athletes and I look forward to celebrating these changes with our fans and donors," President James Donahue said.

Hundreds of alumni, parents, faculty, staff, foundations, and friends of the College followed the lead of Kevin Nagle, George and Clare Schmitt, Nick and JoAnne Moore, Michael and Mercedes Stead, and the Kalmanovitz Foundation, and contributed to the Student Athlete Performance Complex. "We are thankful to our generous donors who have contributed to this exciting project and we can't wait to showcase the improvements next season," Director of Athletics Mike Matoso said. "This project will impact our entire community and will help us compete at the highest level."

Phase two is planned for other new construction in the spring of 2019 and will include additional upgrades to McKeon Pavilion, and the addition of a new weight and training space at Madigan Gym as part of the overall strategy to create what will now be known as the Student Athlete Performance Complex at Saint Mary's College.

This is the third capital project donors have funded in recent years. The Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center opened in 2015. “The Saint Mary’s College community is very grateful to the many, many generous donors who have made these projects possible,” said President Donahue.
