Graduate Student Spotlight: Gabriella Iniguez MA '18

September 20, 2018

After earning her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise Science from California State University, Monterey Bay, and becoming an experienced American College of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer, Gabi Iniguez MA ’18, wanted to expand her education and skill set even further.

When she discovered how much she enjoys being part of all that goes into sport events behind the scenes, Gabi quickly developed an interest in working for professional sports teams in stadium/arena operations. This past July, Gabi accepted a Guest Experience Representative position with the Oakland Raiders, and just recently began working in Arena Operations for the Golden State Warriors.

Gabi shares that she’s already applied what she’s learned in the classroom to her current positions. “My favorite class so far in the Graduate Kinesiology program has been Supervision & Legal Aspects. Professor Piper Brewster is an awesome instructor, and while her course is tough, I find myself applying everything she’s taught to my current jobs.”

When reflecting on additional lessons that allow her to excel in the professional world, Gabi mentions the importance of meeting with guest speakers and participating in class presentations. “Knowing how to speak to different people in a professional tone and being comfortable doing so has been the most important skill I have developed so far. Before this program, I was not comfortable speaking in front of groups and now I am 100% confident to do so.”

The social aspects of the program have also been rewarding and important to Gabi’s SMC experience. “The program has truly brought me 20+ new best friends who have helped me excel in numerous ways. Everybody is willing to help build connections, help with studying, and be a great friend during stressful times.”
