KSOE Alumni Spotlight - Robin Huey

by Kalmanovitz School of Education Staff | April 30, 2025

I am a Kalmanovitz School of Education Alum (BALOS Class of 2022). When I was going through the BALOS program, my goal was to apply to law school and become a lawyer after I graduated.   However, I learned so much about myself during my time in the BALOS program that by the time I graduated, I was torn. Going to law school had been my dream for many years, but my perspective was changing. I gave myself one year to decide - that's how torn I was. My choices were law school or the Master's in Leadership program at SMC - those were my only considerations and after months of thought and prayer and research, I felt like this was the best fit for me and my career (which has taken off like a rocket since leaving BALOS and entering the Master's program!)

This program was FILLED with moments that really stood out, but during the summer of 2024, in our Group Facilitation/Team Coaching course with Professor Maura Wolf, I was assigned a project with 3 dynamic scholars (Angelica Lara, Tina Cortez and Luis Enriquez) in this project we focused on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). We researched and discussed the effects of toxic stress on children and presented our findings to our cohort. I found this to be confirming, and enlightening. I was incredibly moved by this project and grateful to be in such an amazing group.

What I learned was to be flexible and give myself grace because balancing a family, career and education can be tough. My support system is amazing, headed up by my wonderful husband Reginald Huey - he empowered me to say no - even to him, when social events came up when I was faced with deadlines. But giving myself grace was the most important part of my journey - and I had to regularly remind myself that I deserved it.

Fortunately, my career and education have gone hand in hand over the last 5 years. I started BALOS in the fall of 2020 and have applied what I have learned in each program to my daily professional life so well that it has resulted in three major promotions at my firm. I learned a lot about who I am, and how that informs my leadership. This helps me to lean into my strengths and confront the things that challenge me which has ultimately helped me to grow as a leader.

My biggest passion is my family and my hobbies are baking, and laying on a sunny beach listening to music and reading! All of these hobbies inspire me to be and present my very best self to the world. To share the knowledge that I have gained selflessly, and inspire those that come after me to gather and share MORE. More knowledge, more compassion, more integrity, more LOVE!
