Third Iteration of Late Night Café Highlights Student Wellness, Academic Success and Accessible Engagement

Students looking for a welcoming and supportive place to study during one of the busiest points in the semester once again found community, resources and connection at the April 15 Late Night Café, hosted by Student Activities & Engagement across multiple campus spaces.

Now in its third iteration, Late Night Café continues to evolve into a high impact initiative focused on student wellness, academic excellence and meaningful engagement. The April event saw a 23% increase in attendance from March’s Late Night Café and a 65% increase since the very first Late Night Café launched in February, demonstrating a growing student demand for intentional and low stimulation programming.

Building on the success of previous events, Student Activities & Engagement transformed Café Louis, the 1928 Pub, Dryden Hall and additional campus spaces into connected late night study hubs designed to support students academically, socially and emotionally. Students were able to move throughout the spaces, study independently, collaborate with peers and access campus resources in ways that best supported their individual needs.

“It [Late Night Café] encouraged me to participate more in campus events because of the community experience. It’s amazing to be able to spend time with peers and feel less stressed. It reminded me that not all SMC events have to be super high energy.” - Luna Delgado '29

Creating Space for Connection and Balance

As the campus library renovation continues, Late Night Café has become more than an alternative study space. The program reflects Saint Mary’s commitment to creating accessible opportunities for students to connect with one another outside of traditional high energy events.

While many campus programs center large scale entertainment, Late Night Café offers students a quieter environment focused on community, wellness and balance.

“It [Late Night Café] encouraged me to participate more in campus events because of that community experience! it’s amazing to just be able to spend time with peers and feel less stressed. it reminded me that not all SMC events have to be super high energy,” shared Luna Delgado ’29.

Students also had access to academic and wellness support throughout the evening through collaborations with the Library, Center for Writing Across the Curriculum, High Potential Program, and Counseling and Psychological Services.

Paula Camacho ’27 shared, “It [Late Night Café] provided an accessible time for me to come by and take a part of campus events!”

Growing a Student Centered Tradition

The continued increase in attendance reflects how students are responding positively to programming that prioritizes comfort, accessibility and authentic connection. Through thoughtful collaboration and intentional programming, Student Activities & Engagement continues to create spaces where students can thrive academically while also building community in meaningful and sustainable ways.

As Late Night Café continues to grow, the initiative remains an important example of how student centered programming can support academic achievement, wellness and belonging during critical moments throughout the semester.
