Men's Rugby Ends Season With 17-24 Loss to Navy
April 21, 2007---State College, Penn. The Saint Mary's Gaels ended their spectacular season in the USA Rugby Round of Eight, with a hard-fought 17-24 loss to the Navy Midshipmen.
The Gaels built up a 12-5 lead by halftime, with tries scored by Kevin Swiryn ’07 and Brendan O’Meara ’08. O’Meara would add a second try later in the game, but Navy jumped ahead and held off late pressure from the Gaels to secure the win.
Navy will move on to the Collegiate Men’s Division I Semifinal, held at Stanford University, where they will face the defending champion California Golden Bears on Friday May 4, at 3 p.m. The second semifinal game, kicking off at 5 p.m., will pit BYU and Penn State for a shot at the championship.
SMC finishes the 2007 season with a 17-3 record overall.
