SMC Politics Alum Charlie Loudon Chosen For 2019-20 California Senate Fellow
Politics Class of 2018 Alum Charlie Loudon describes his experiences.
"I feel very honored and humbled to have been selected to participate in the 2019-2020 Capital Fellows Program as a California Senate Fellow. I am very grateful to my Saint Mary’s College Politics professors for igniting my interest in policymaking – and in particular to Professor Longo for encouraging me to apply to this program. I also credit a 2015 visit to the State Capitol as a member of the Saint Mary’s College Men’s Rugby team to receive honors for winning back-to-back National Championship titles, as it was then I first heard of the Capital Fellows Program. Since graduation from Saint Mary’s College in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Anthropology minor, I have had the opportunity to work on the development of two innovative projects that I believe will be catalysts to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and dramatic improvements to the quality of life in the Northern California Megaregion: the Shared Autonomous Vehicle Project in the Tri-Valley and the Valley Link Rail Project planned to link the Bay Area and communities in Northern San Joaquin County. Both of these transformative projects had their origin in critical legislation that enabled a new technology and a new governance model to advance. It has been both heartening and inspiring for me to experience firsthand just how powerfully effective the legislative process can be and how it can dramatically affect positive change in our communities and daily lives. I am really looking forward to the year ahead!"
