Student Instagram Show
Beginning Sunday Oct. 18, students can submit their best Instagram photos to be considered for the “Instagram Student Show” exhibit in February at the SMC Museum of Art.
"Instagram is something people are proud of, they take pride in their amount of likes and followers, and what photos they post,” said John Schneider, museum administrator. “This is an opportunity for the community to come together and display student work."
The goal of the show is to give students an opportunity to showcase the photos they share with peers through Instagram. The contest is based off of two visions: artistic and creative. The criteria for what is considered artistic or creative is up to the students. "It's open-ended,” Schneider said. “It's how students want to present their photos."
To enter the contest, current students, both undergraduate and graduate, should put the hashtag #artistic or #creative on their Instagram photos, and a panel of Art Department staff will decide which photos best fit the museum’s vision.
The show’s inspiration came from Richard Prince's popular exhibit New Portraits, which featured blown-up photos from his Instagram feed. The “Instagram Student Show” will be accepting contest photos through Dec. 18. The contest is a chance for all students to show off their best photos and have the opportunity to have a piece of work displayed in the museum.
The top 25 photos will be blown up––Instagram caption and all––and displayed along the gallery walls with the two grand prize-winning photos in the spotlight. The grand-prize winners will receive a brand-new FujiFilm instant camera, a gift from the museum, and the winning photographers can take home their prints.
