Sanitary Sewer Best Management Practices (BMPs)

The term 'Best Management Practices', or BMPs is a way to describe acceptable practices that could be implemented to protect the environment and water quality. A BMP can be a structural "thing" that you actually install, such as runoff diversions or silt fence, or can be part of the "process" that you use to plan and conduct College operations. Examples include keeping a clean workarea, storing chemicals away from the rain or preventing spills by properly managing chemical storage.
Sanitary Sewer BMPs:
The College maintains a sanitary sewer permit that regulates the discharges into sinks, toilets, floor drains, floor sinks in janitors' closets and other locations that contribute to the sanitary sewer. No chemicals (acids, bases, flammables or other hazardous materials) may be discharged to the sanitary sewer, unless approved by the permit. Approved waste include gray water, black water and other non-hazardous materials. Sinks in biology and chemistry labs may not be used to discard lab chemicals - these are collected and disposed separately.
