Design and Technical Theatre

The Design and Technical Theatre major provides comprehensive training for collaborative theatre artists. An emphasis on dramaturgy, communication, and visual literacy (along with hands-on production experience) prepares students for fields such as stage management, scenic or lighting design, and technical direction. Students pursuing a major in Design and Technical Theatre must complete the following required lower- and upper-division courses:

47 Theatre Lab - Design/Tech (.25x4, a total of 1.0 units)

Upper Division:

130 Foundations of Theatre II

136 Theatre: Special Studies (Writing in the Disciplines)

138 Portfolio Preparation (.25)

142 Theatre Production Practicum (.25, .5 or 1.0, for total of 1.5)

197 Internship or Special Study

198 Senior Project (Perfroming Arts Departmental Course)

Any three of the following courses:

Minor Requirements

The Theatre minor at SMC is both flexible and achievable, requiring just 7.0 academic credits.

Lower Division (3.0 units total):

Perfa 01 Perceiving the Performing Arts

Perfa 30 Foundations of Theatre I

Perfa 35 or 36 Theatre Masterpieces (.5)

Perfa 42 Introduction to Technical Theatre (.5)

And four additional units (4.0 units total) in the following areas:

  • 1 unit in Acting
  • 1 unit in Theatre Theory/History/Criticism
  • 1 unit in Production/Design
  • 1 elective unit (pre-approval required)
