CLASS OF 2029 - First Year Student Candidates

Jesse R. (Candidate for Senator)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I want to create change! Specifically I'm looking to create change in partnership with the school ministry to bring a Spanish mass to campus.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

Prejudice on Campus, More Involvement WIth Catholic Faith For Non-English Speakers.

Tyra F. (Candidate for Class Chair and Vice Chair)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I would like to be included in bigger conversations. I hope to make SMC a better place through my involvement.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

I believe in striving for equality, inclusivity, and kindness towards all.

Diego H. (Candidate for Senator)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I would love to help make Saint Mary’s become an even better campus from academics to community.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

I think Saint Mary’s should be a safe place for all people to easily connect with one another, and that the cafe should have cheaper smoothies.

Marc Thomas V. (Candidate for Senator)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

Student government sounds interesting and I would like to make a positive impact on my peers for my peers.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

I don't know much about SMC life, but I know overall class/dorm communication needs work.

Oscar Z. (Candidate for Class Chair and Vice Chair)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I am interested in joining because it would feel like an amazing honor to serve in AS. This school will give me many new and amazing opportunities to learn and grow as not only a student, but an individual as well. I know my experience and my ability to listen to others can make a difference through seeking what is best for my fellow first year peers!

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

Though I have been here only for a week, I cannot think of anything that has brought a concern to my mind. Therefore, I do not have any issues to address. If I am elected into AS I will be sure to echo any issues I hear from any of my peers, so that their voices are heard as well.

Johnathan B. (Candidate for Vice Chair)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I am joining Associated Students to connect with like-minded and ambitious individuals, develop my leadership skills, and help represent the ideals of my fellow classmates. I have a strong passion for working to improve the community I am part of, and I am not someone who sits on the sidelines. I have found St. Mary’s to be a very welcoming and inclusive campus, and I want to immerse myself in its culture as much as possible. That said, I believe I am the best candidate, not because my competition is weak or unfit, but because I am confident and perspicacious enough to do what it takes to get the job done.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

I feel that many students are afraid to voice their opinions or personal points of view publicly. To help combat this fear, I believe a platform should be created where people can share their thoughts and ideas without fear of judgment from others. I want this platform to welcome all students and encourage them to express themselves while helping to create a safe environment for the community. Additionally, I would like to promote more peer-based communication, where students feel comfortable discussing personal matters with one another.

Oliver H. (Candidate for Class Chair)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I want to make a difference in my community. Often I feel like people take these jobs for power and personal gain, I think that trend needs to change. People should only be in these positions for the betterment of their constituents. I intend to fight for the students and staff of st Mary’s.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

I think something that could be addressed would be the addition of security cameras in the hall ways. I’m normally against heightened security as it often leads to over policing and a lack of privacy, however I know an issue for my peers in Aquinas is the lack of security that has allowed the bigot in the hall to get away with it. I think if used in a correct way, being only used for student safety, I feel as it could discourage acts of vandalism and theft.

Aaria M. (Candidate for Senator)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

The reason why I am interested is because I believe that I can help the Saint Mary’s community out. An example of where I helped is from during the summer I have volunteered to help running candidates for my city mayor, city council member and state senate in my city by doing canvassing, going to events and talking about the candidates and why people should consider them as their vote.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

I believe that people with disabilities is an important topic to talk about because there is many things that I feel like we can do to provide more support for them.

Xander M. (Candidate for Vice Chair and Senator)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I heard about it during the involvement fair and found interest in it. I’d like to be more directly involved with my peers and the Saint Mary’s community.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

Taking student issues more seriously (such as addressing targeted forms of harassment, etc.)

CLASS OF 2028 - Second Year Student Candidates

Shasta G. (Candidate for Vice Chair)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I want to be more involved on campus and help make much needed changes. I was on student council for two years in high school.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

One important issue that AS needs to address is the racism here on campus and how we can help mitigate it.

Brendan T. (Candidate for Vice Chair and Senator)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I am interested in joining AS because I live getting involved in important policy decisions for my school and class. I think that if someone feels there should be a shift in policy, then it is up to them to take action about it rather than simply talk about it.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

An important issue I think AS should adress is mental health on campus. I feel that we can and should build on the CAPS sessions students already have access to and we need to make sure that this campus goes the extra mile in offering mental support for students.

Ethan F. (Candidate for Senator)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I am a politics major and know Hannah herself from my politics classes. She asked if I would join so knowing her and my love and knowing how important politics is, I would love to be one of the voices on campus that speaks for all.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

One of the issues I see on campus relates to campus food plans. Changes within it have caused many students to be caught off guard and upset with these new changes that do not benefit them.

CLASS OF 2027 - Third Year Student Candidates (All Spots Currently Filled)

CLASS OF 2026 - Fourth Year Student Candidates

Sam M. (Candidate for Senator)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

Students at Saint Mary's deserve a more fulfilled exposure to a wider range of perspectives

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

Professors often structure their classes around a narrow field of subtopics

Olivia S. (Candidate for Senator)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I want to be more involved on campus and help make senior year the best it can be for all my classmates.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

The increase in the amount of people being disrespectful towards one another.

Kaylin H. (Candidate for Senator)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I want to join associated students to connect with students and bettering their experiences on campus. Not everyone on campus has had the privilege of allowing it to feel like home or being able to feel truly welcome. I want to be able to learn from others and provide collaborative contributions to a space that may be someone first real big step into adulthood. Hearing about peoples experiences in classrooms, housing spaces, experiences with staff, and peers and not being able to directly have connections to share ideas on how to fix or add more tools to improve these experiences is something that I want to be able to have. I believe that being a part of Associated Students would allow me to provide and learn from others and take this knowledge into the new spaces I encounter in my future and be already equipped from this experience to be able to curate similar spaces wherever l go. I also think serving in this role goes along with my natural skillsets. For example, a strong personal skill of mine is my bravery and being able to speak up and lead. With my experience as a student ambassador and other leader roles I have had to execute some of the tasks expected of a student representative. When the racial story happened on campus I asked to sit in on the meeting happening with the counselors and the president. It was not required of me to be there but I wanted to hear what he had to say. As I sat in on the meeting I realized that I could use more voice to share a student perspective and I asked to work with him to on how to approach the student body. He did not follow through with me even though he said he would, but I feel that as a class senator I could use my abilities when I was not given the chance before. My enthusiasm and passion for making everyone feel included and welcome is something that comes from experiences of feeling left out, lonely, and misunderstood in my past. So I have taken opportunities to make sure that I can provide those spaces that I missed out on no matter race, class, or gender. All of my employment has been focused around social skills and connecting with people. Whether that's greeting and providing a space of enjoyment in the rec center, or sharing my experiences on this campus and how I have made this place feel like home to perspective families as a student ambassador. This role feels right up my alley with my personal skill set and experiences.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

With my time at Saint Mary's recently there was incidents involving racism brought to the forefront of our community. Revealing some other racial stories and issues at play on this campus. This made me think of ways to provide more education to those who act against others. For example I am not sure how much of say we have as associated students but requiring the 1st level ethnic studies course as part of the core curriculum would definitely be beneficial. If this is not a possibility having events where students can express to people in power the things people may be experiencing on campus and was to make our community more tight nit. The students should have more of a say on books we're reading in seminar, or what to use the enhancement fee in a way that benefits everyone and not just athletes. Also having better support and connecting event for commuters on our campus. I have had friends who have been commuters and have found it challenging at time to fully get involved on campus. Overall I believe that really giving students a space where their voices can be heard and they can feel confident something will be done about it, whether that a serious issue or more fun implementations on campus and they can truly see a change happening.

Tyler C. (Candidate for Senator)

Why are you interested in joining AS?

I am interested to hold a leadership position of which I can represent the views of students around me. I would like to see my capabilities as a leader in a group setting because it aligns with my future goals. Being a senator/representative at St. Mary’s provides a unique opportunity that you wouldn’t be able to get at most universities, as we are a small school students voice can hold a lot of weight.

What is something that you feel is an important issue that the AS needs to address?

Recently we have had a school-wide issue of discrimination that I would like to include my perspective on. Mostly I am interested to find topics to be addressed as the school year progresses.
