WASC Accreditation

WASC Accreditation

Since 1948, Saint Mary's College (SMC) has been accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Collegess (WASC), our regional accreditation agency. Attaining and maintaining regional accreditation is considered an imperative for all colleges and universities, as it ensures to the public an institution has been rigorously evaluated and deemed to have met high standards for quality and effectiveness. Accreditation confers a variety of benefits, especially providing students access to federal financial aid resources such as federal loans, grants, and work study.

WASC Reaffirmation of Saint Mary’s College

Every WASC-accredited college and university is required to undergo a periodic institutional review in which they demonstrate their ongoing commitment to meeting specific standards and criteria for quality, integrity, and effectiveness. SMC's accreditation was reaffirmed by WASC in 2015 following an in-depth review that formally engaged the College in a community-wide reflection and evaluation of institutional capacity and educational effectiveness. In its letter reaffirming SMC's accreditation, the WASC Commission commended many aspects of the College, including its cohesive mission, the multiple ways in which this mission permeates the culture and helps strengthen our educational programs, the diversity of our student body and curriculum, and our ongoing financial stability.

In Fall 2018, SMC submitted an interim report to WASC documenting our progress in addressing Commission recommendations to improve the College. Following a review of this report and a meeting with SMC leadership, WASC's Interim Report Committee submitted an Interim Report Action Summary detailing its commendations for our progress and additional recommendations as SMC prepares for its next reaccreditation in 2023.
