Mission

The Institutional and Educational Effectiveness Division (IEE) at Saint Mary’s College of California supports the College’s liberal arts, Lasallian, and Catholic mission through integrated institutional and educational effectiveness efforts. Institutional Effectiveness is led by the Director of Institutional Research, and Educational Effectiveness is led by the Associate Vice Provost for Educational Effectiveness (AVP-EE).

Educational Effectiveness leads the assessment of student learning and program review processes to ensure the quality and coherence of the College’s academic programs.

Accreditation/Authorization →

Together, the IEE Division supports WSCUC and professional accreditation, oversees state authorization compliance, and manages federal data reporting, advancing institutional excellence, continuous improvement, and strategic planning.

Institutional Effectiveness

The IEE Division oversees the following offices and committees, helping guide key functions and decisions.

Data Governance

Data Governance is the stewardship of data through policies, practices, and operations. Facilitated in collaboration between the Institutional and Educational Effectiveness (IEE) Division and Administrative Information Services (AIS), the Data Governance Committee provides a college-wide data strategies to support evidence-based decision-making.

The Saint Mary’s College Institutional Effectiveness Committee advises senior College leadership on the effectiveness and prioritization of activities toward the achievement of institutional strategic goals and toward continuous quality improvement across the College.

The Institutional Research office at Saint Mary's College of California is dedicated to fostering a culture of data-driven excellence and informed, equity minded, decision-making. Our mission is to empower our community with accurate, timely, and insightful information that supports strategic planning, enhances student success, and promotes institutional effectiveness.

The Center for Equity and Excellence in Teaching (CEET) is committed to providing resources and support to all who teach at SMC, and to promoting and celebrating excellence in pedagogy and instructional design.

Office of Assessment & Educational Effectiveness

Assessment initiatives at Saint Mary’s College are designed to enhance student educational experiences driven by the mission of the College. To meet this goal, assessment practices are intentionally designed to focus on continual improvement on student-centered pedagogy, course designs, and curriculum.

Program Review

The program review process is grounded in the continuous improvement model and supports academic programs in maintaining the highest standards of education. It provides opportunities for the departments and programs to discuss and further develop plans for how their campus roles, educational goals, and curricula support the College-wide Strategic Plan, school-level priorities, and other student success metrics.

Student Feedback Survey

Undergraduate faculty are asked to conduct the Student Survey online in class during the last two weeks of classes before finals. Timing for graduate and professional programs are varied. After surveys close and course grades are distributed, the aggregate ratings and feedback from the survey responses become available to SMC faculty and administrators in a report format.

Undergraduate Core Curriculum

The Core Curriculum consists of skills, knowledge, and values that provide the foundation of student learning at Saint Mary's College. It is an intentional, developmental, and integrated program of study in four broad intellectual areas: Habits of Mind, Pathways to Knowledge, Theological Understanding, and Engaging the World.
