1. In the Bay Area

 

BAIA Business Association Italy America offers internships to students of Italian who are fluent in English and Italian and have some business/marketing or engineering background and computer literacy. Students work with professionals in the Bay Area. These are 12 weeks programs, 25 hours per week, with flexible schedule. Some travel expenses will be covered.

Museo Italo Americano in San Francisco

The mission of the museum is to preserve Italian heritage for future generations through art exhibitions, language classes, cultural programs, “feste” and more. Volunteers do administrative work, help setting up events and take care of advertisements.

Italian Community Services Agency in San Francisco offers advocacy, social services, homecare, transportation and meals, as well as information and referrals to seniors and adults with disabilities.

Students volunteers help read mail, interact, and encourage seniors to engage in personal and community activities. Conversational knowledge of Italian is helpful but not necessary.

Il Consolato Generale d’Italia offers small internship opportunities for short periods of time in which students help with administrative work.

Spazio Italiano is an Italian language center for children and their families located in San Francisco. It offers full immersion programs for children from 6 months to 13 years of age. Student volunteers are requested to be there once a week for three hours for a minimum of 12 weeks. Interaction with children would be the main role of the students.

La Piccola Scuola Italiana is a full immersion Italian preschool in San Francisco. Student volunteers are required to have had experience with kids and/or be enrolled in an Education program.

Scuola di Lingua e Cultura Italiana in South San Francisco, offers Italian language classes for adults and children. Volunteers work mostly with children ages 6 to 11 but will also have the opportunity to observe classes for adults and possibly sub for some of them. Classes are held every Saturday from 10:00 until 12:30 p.m. from September through April

Global Experience. This is a program that offers internships for all levels of Italian and in a variety of sectors. Some of the internships include a language course prior to the work experience. The cost depends on whether an Italian course is included and on the individual positions.

4. Job Opportunities

 

Oakland Unified School District: Montclair Elementary School offers Italian classes in the morning four times per week, half an hour each time September to June. Students who apply for the position must be 21 or older, fluent (or almost fluent) in Italian. They need a criminal background check and a TB test.  Starting pay $ 50 per hour.

5. Schools and Institutes that offer internships

 

Study in Italy, Genoa offers a large variety of internships from government jobs to theater and music, from law office work to school opportunities. Students must have a good knowledge of Italian and need to pay a fee to the school of $1,500. They go from one to three months.

The Istituto Europeo in Florence offers internship programs dedicated to providing hands on experiences in various businesses in Florence. Students who apply for an internship are required to take language classes at the Institute. Students don’t need to be fluent in Italian to apply.

SACI: Studio Art Center International in Florence is mostly for artists and actors. The volunteer work and services students offer to the community are mostly in schools, hospitals and immigration programs where students show their art work.
