Berkeley Buddhist Temple

How do you welcome and support new members of your community?
We have a greeting station, which began after we reopened early during the COVID pandemic, and everyone is greeted and offered a nametag. We also announce new guests so that members of our community can identify and welcome them during our coffee social after each service. Should a new guest wish to become a member of the temple, they are given a welcome packet with a lot more detailed information about the temple and how to participate in the many events we hold.
What is one thing you wish more people understood about your faith and religious community?
Buddhism is a religion and not just simply philosophy. Like all religions, we have many complex philosophies, cosmologies (understandings of the universe), ontologies (understandings of the self), practices, etc. Some of these things might feel very familiar or similar to those of other religions, but some may seem very different or even "exotic". It is important to spend time in conversation, study, and practice to understand religions and cultures before making sweeping statements about them.
