Interlibrary Loan Policy

Saint Mary’s College Library’s Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service allows patrons to borrow materials from libraries and institutions outside of SMC. Because lending libraries own these materials, patrons must handle them carefully and return them by the specified due date.

Damage, loss, or failure to return ILL materials may result in the Library being unable to borrow materials from the lending institution. This can result in replacement fees and/or blocks to patron accounts. Therefore, understanding and following the outlined policies can prevent these consequences.

Borrowing Agreement

At checkout, patrons will be asked to review and sign the ILL borrowing agreement located on the item’s bookband. By signing and checking out an ILL item, patrons agree to the following:

  1. You understand that the item is not owned by the SMC Library and should be handled with care.
  2. You agree to return the item by the listed due date.
  3. You agree to return the item in the same condition listed on the book band, and leave the book band attached to the borrowed item.

If you need additional time for an ILL item, you may submit a renewal request by emailing libraryservicedesk@stmarys-ca.edu or replying to the ILL notification email before the due date. Renewals are subject to approval by the lending library and are not guaranteed.

Failure to Accept the Agreement

Patrons who do not agree to these terms or decline to sign the ILL agreement will not be able to check out requested ILL materials
The library reserves the right to suspend library services and privileges for those who violate this policy in order to maintain a safe and respectful environment for the SMC community.
